How often should I get an eye exam?
Patients should be seen annually for an eye exam. At-risk patients, such as diabetics, should get annual or more frequent exams.
Accurate prescriptions and diagnosis through experienced care
Dr. O’Donnell has over two decades of experience performing complete eye examinations. When he does eye exams, he refuses to cut corners. Technology is rapidly changing the eye care industry and Dr. O’Donnell uses the latest in diagnostic equipment in his exams.
Visual Acuity testing
Dr. O’Donnell starts his exam with a Visual Acuity Test using the familiar chart of decreasing letter size, known as the Snellen chart.
Setting your prescription—Automated Refractive Testing
Dr. O’Donnell next performs advanced automated refractive testing. This is the part of the eye exam that determines the power needed for the lens in your glasses or contact lenses to see your best. An autorefractor is used to get a starting point on your prescription and then a phoropter is used to determine the exact prescription.
Eye Health Examination
Dr. O’Donnell does a thorough review of your eyes’ health history and your medical history and conducts various tests of your eye’s health. These include a glaucoma check and a dilated exam to check your internal eye health. As needed, he uses various other diagnostic tools to test for your eye health.
What is a dilated exam?
In a dilated exam, special eye drops are placed in your eyes which cause the pupils to widen. Dr. O’Donnell uses special magnifying lens to examine your retina for signs of damage or disease such diabetic retinopathy or macular degeneration..
Dr. O’Donnell explains all his findings and advises on your optical needs, such as UV protection, reflection-free lenses, multi-focal lenses, etc., and on any treatment needed for eye health issues.
